The Embers of Hope (Freedom's Holy Light, No 5)

Another wonderful installment!
The Freedom's Holy Light series is a rare treasure. Not many people have heard of them, but they are up there among Francine Rivers's Mark of the Lion and Bodie Thoene's The Zion Covenant Series. This, the 5th book, is set during the American Revolution towards the end of the war. Morgan, the son of a tory, and Prudence, his new wife, are spying for Washington. These books show the good and bad of both sides in a very realistic way. I found myself moved over the conflict between loyalty to country and loyalty to family. All the old characters are back--and some new ones! If you haven't read them already, I suggest you start with the first one, The Gathering Dawn. They're a blend of romance and adventure--my favorite! I've read this series three times. They are definitely worth buying!

Ending the Battle Within: How to Create a Harmonious Life Working With Your Sub-Personalities

It Works!
I have had the pleasure of meeting this author. The book was presented to me as a gift. I was a single parent who had lost everything material. I was on a new journey feeling very lost. Over the last seven years I have used this book as a way of life. The instructions are clear and short to the point. The scenario's I have written have become my life. Even pictures and people have entered my life as I have practiced many principals of this book. I have passed the message, as well as recommended this book to so many others. The chapters tend to touch each part of my life on a daily basis. This book has been and will continue to be a part of my life. I will continue to give this book as a gift to others so they may also accept the abundance this author has to offer. This book is truly a way of life!

The Envelope
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (August, 2002)
Author: Wilson Crawford
Average review score:

The Best I've Read in Awhile
Have you ever felt you had nowhere to turn? Like if much more were put on your shoulders, you'd break? Like if you were given just one chance, you could turn your life around? You're definitely not alone in that feeling.

The Envelope, by Wilson Crawford, outlines four individual's lives that were less than perfect. Each endured different struggles which were equally demanding on the lives around them. This was, of course, until the mysterious envelope appeared.

Though each character never outwardly attributed the changes in their lives to the envelope, it seems to have been the catapult for many successes. The originator of the envelope clearly followed a rocky path finding fortunate circumstances and wanted this good fortune spread to many others.

The subtle religious undertones described with each twist of the plot were both welcomed and comforting to this book reviewer. Each individual either attended church, worked the ministry or would attend church. This proved to be very uplifting during more than one part of the book.

Crawford's ability to melt one character's life into the next is breathtaking. Descriptions are vibrant, but by no means overdone. Readers have the ability to explore a wide range of imaginative senses and emotions. I wish it hadn't ended as quickly as it did - I was very interested to see ow the envelope touched the next set of lives in came into contact with.

Eyewitness: Mythology (Eyewitness Books)
Published in Library Binding by DK Publishing (01 April, 2000)
Authors: Neil Philip and Andy Crawford
Average review score:

Truly a mini-museum between the covers of a book
The L.A. Times Book Review said the Eyewitness Books series is "Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book" and that is certainly the perfect description. When you leaf through "Mythology" and see all the color photographs of artifacts and artwork, you will see that this book is a short course in Comparative Mythology, rather than just Classical Mythology. The book approaches the concept of mythology as "religion in story form," and Neil Philip's book is structured by concepts rather than cultures. Each of the two-dozen two-page spreads is devoted to such things as the creation of the world, making humankind, floods and storms, the elements, ancestor worship, superheroes, gods of war, mythical beasts and sacred sites. "Mythology" accounts for dozens of cultures, from the Aborigines of Australia to the Native American Zuni people. I do not know if students today still bother to draw things for their reports or if they just download photographs from the Internet, but "Mythology" is the sort of book where you will find something to draw for any report on any aspect of mythology you have to do for school. These items are taken from literally dozens of major museums around the world and you are pretty much guaranteed to see lots of fascinating objects you have never seen before. Usually students become interested in mythology through the study of the myths of the ancient Greeks. "Mythology" will get them interested in the myths of other cultures as well. Besides, it is fun just to look at the pictures.

Eyewitness: World War I (Eyewitness Books)
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 October, 2001)
Authors: Simon Adams and Andy Crawford
Average review score:

Devastation
... In war, human lives are like dust
as bullets and arrows fly with death.
The wandering ghosts, the lost souls
make the scene still more mournful.
There were children, just tiny things,
born in a bad time,
separated from their parents.
No one was there to hold them close.
Heart-rending were their infant cries.

-Nguyen Du (1765-1820)

During the start of the 20th century, the countries of Europe increased in hostility towards one another. Few imagined a continental war. Even now, few of us can even imagine such a war, let alone what happened on Sept 11th. It is horrifying to imagine that in fact, it could happen a third time and repeat itself with alarming frequency until the end of time. In this cycle of violence, it seems man will never learn how to achieve peace.

What this book does, is take a look at the devastating first-hand reports and contemporary photographs of the battles that slaughtered millions.

The contents include:

Divided Europe - Aggressive policies and arrogant behavior.
The Fatal Shot - Assassination on June 28, 1914
War in the West - Interesting picture of Christmas pudding that was
sent as a gift to soldiers in 1914
Fighting Men - How the lives of millions of men changed
Enlisting - See what a survival kit looked like
Digging in the Trenches -The philosophy behind how the trenches were constructed
is interesting.
Life in the Trenches - Dealing with rats, lice and mud
Ready to Fight - weapons used during raids

Communications and Supplies - missile messages and postal pigeons
Observation and Patrol - Artificial trees and barbed wire. You can see how
adaptations were made during the war for various reasons.
Bombardment - Body armor and shell power
Over the Top - Pictures of men leaving the trenches and tending to the wounded>
Casualty - 21 million wounded
Women at War - Supporting the troops
War in the Air - Aircraft guns and fighter planes
Zeppelin - Early in the war, airships could fly higher than planes so it
was almost impossible to shoot them down.
War at Sea - Life inside a U-Boat
Gallipoli - Tin cans made into grenades
The battle of Verdun - "What a bloodbath, what horrid images, what a slaughter. I just cannot find the words to express my feelings. Hell cannot be this dreadful." ~Albert Joubaire
Gas Attack - What happened if the wind blew in the wrong direction?
The Eastern Front - Why Russian soldiers refused to fight at some point.
War in the desert - Pictures of Lawrence of Arabia's rifle and shoes called "sand shoes."
Espionage - A short story of secret ink, invisible ink, button messages, Mata Hari, hidden messages in tin cans, army intelligence, pocket cameras.
Tank warfare - See inside a tank
The US enters the war - pictures of infantry equipment
Under enemy lines - Pictures of the most horrendous conditions
The Final Year - Timeline of the end of the war
Armistice and Peace - Read about the Peace Treaties
The Cost of the War - The reality of war = death. Pictures of memorials.

I think it is good for children to read this type of book to see where we have been and where we don't want to go again.

Film As Ethnography
Published in Paperback by Manchester Univ Pr (November, 1992)
Authors: Peter Ian Crawford, David Turton, and Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology
Average review score:

A New Approach to Old Cultures: The Eye of the Camera
Visual Anthropology is a fast growing discipline within the domain of social sciences. Since the historical seminal book "Principles of Visual Anthropology" edited by Hockings in mid seventies, more and more writings in this area came to light to explain and put to discussion some theories and practices that both anthropologists and filmmakers did in aproaching various ethnic groups arround the world. "Film as Ethnography" is perhaps the best book ever published as a group of collected papers in this area. His editors, P. I. Crawford and D. Turton made available not only to the specialist but also to the general reader interested in non-ficcion film or ethnography, a range of different approaches to the matter from the practical matters to the more theoretical thinking. In short: a must to read and consult. A landmark to remember.

The Four Deuces: A Korean War Story
Published in Paperback by Presidio Pr (December, 1989)
Author: C. S. Crawford
Average review score:

The best read on enlisted Marines in the Korean War
Author wastes no time to bring you in as one of his men once in Korea. His prose flows exactly how jarheads communicate to each other, what they thought of [post WW2] Harry Truman's WAR,...the Corps and any other extraneous subject matter. He even takes you on his brief R&R to a pastoral Japanese locale. Albeit, the author"s prose is profane, yet in essence, it is pure and typical Marine lore to anyone who wants to recall the precipitious Eastern Front battlefield at the Punchbowl, while continuing on to the bloody, murderous sieges for the rat-infested combat outposts on the Western Front. The combat actions are vivid and varied; however, just being there, reduces the doubt, how it is to being an enlisted Marine at WAR..., which just wouldn"t go away. If you want a view of that maelstrom, this is the book for you. C. S. Crawford pens the TRUTH of how it is to be a Marine grunt up to his eyeballs in mortal combat against a resolute and inscrutable enemy....there was a slogan in WW2 times: "Is this trip necessary?" Well, this book is just that. "THE FOUR DUECES" is a 5 star reader.
